How to make animals talk

How amazing is this? A beluga whale has learned to make sounds that are freakily like human speech. Give it a listen – I promise, it is so weird!

Of course, people have been doing weird things with their voices for years. The word “ventriloquism” comes from the Latin meaning “stomach talker” – and the ancient Greeks thought the noises our stomachs make were the voices of the dead telling us important things! It was quite mystical right up to the 19th century, and it’s still pretty strange to watch. Oh and if you find ventriloquists’ dummies frightening, whatever you do, don’t see the amazing Anthony Hopkins film “Magic”.

Ventriloquists seem to be rising in popularity again, and rightly so. Nina Conti using a person as a puppet is just amazing to watch, check it out:
